your newly elected President of the NCJAA I want to take the opportunity to say hello, thanks for your support to the Association and that I look forward to working and training with you in the future.

I just recently returned home from this year’s conference. What an exciting and informative time! From the surveys that were turned in it appears that the vast majority of attendees enjoyed the conference, the vendors and the first-class instructors we had once again this year.

We had another successful series of training sessions at the conference with approximately 250 in attendance representing more than half of the state’s counties. We also reached our limit in vendors with 63 booths displaying their wares. When you see any of the vendors that participated please thank them for their support.

As we try to shape our daily lives, we entrust our nation’s leaders to right the global economy back on a track toward stability and positive growth.

In the meantime, legislators continue to trim budgets in order to gain ground on deficits.

We feel that impact on the job and at the home.

In the workplace, we strive to be mindful of excess all while keeping security our top priority. Safety remains Nos. 1, 2 and 3 on our list of duties. We also can practice avoiding waste by taking regular inventory of products we use and figuring out where these products are used the most. We all follow a quantitative approach to economics using inventory.

There are excellent qualitative methods of conservation, too. First, figure out ways to strengthen lines of communication to all members of your division. Communication leads to camaraderie, which leads to a closer group in a family-like atmosphere.

Hello, everyone! After a long, cold winter, I’m sure many of us are ready for the warmer weather that spring will bring. Spring gives us all a new hope on the year as the trees turn green and the flowers begin to bloom. There’s something comforting about the newness of spring.

Spring, in turn, brings with it change. Some change is welcomed, while other forms might be just plain difficult.

Certainly, many of us enjoy being able to leave the winter coat at home, trade in the windshield scraper for an umbrella and take a walk outdoors without returning with numb fingers.

We all like how moods of the folks around us tend to become more lively, like our spirits are being warmed by a closer sun. Of course, the attitudes of others tend to reflect how we feel about our own situation, so we feel that cheer of spring within ourselves, too.

As you might already know, the Board of Directors has decided to keep me on as the NCJAA President for the 2010-2011 year.

For those of you who do not know me, my name is Wendell Sain. I am a Jail Administrator from the Davie County Detention Center in Mocksville. I will continue to serve you in anyway possible.

As your President, I am open for any ideas or suggestions that you might have that will make our association better equipped to serve the members and detention centers across the state.

First of all, let me thank you for all your support this year and for allowing me to serve as President of the NCJAA.

Now more than ever, it is important for us as Jail Administrators to come together and learn from – and with – each other. The educational program set for the upcoming conference is going to touch on several training areas. Also, this year, we are having a round table forum on the first day, which will allow questions and answers during our afternoon round table discussion. This is a different format than we have had in the past, and it’s a great opportunity for you to glean answers and learn from others. Situations like these – a real chance for fellowship and exchanging ideas – do not come around too often anymore. I highly recommend you take advantage while you can. I guarantee you will take back something to your county that will benefit you and your day to-
day peers for years to come.

In April, the board came in a day early prior to our board meeting to discuss the long-range plan for the organization. In doing this, we discussed ways to provide better education for the membership. Everyone had some great ideas and looks forward to implementing some of the ideas as early as the 2010 conference. The conference dates are September 28-October 1. In the past several years, we have sold out of our sleeping rooms at the host hotel. I encourage you to contact the Embassy Suites in Greensboro (336-668-4535) and make that hotel reservation.

The year 2009 is gone. Hope everyone had a great CHRISTMAS and a HAPPY NEW YEAR. The board of directors is looking for a good year as we all begin the new year of 2010.

We are planning a workshop to further expand what we can do for the detention facilities across the great state of North Carolina, focusing on new ideas and the future of the NCJAA.

We are in the process of putting together the training for the regional training sessions and annual conference. If anyone has a topic they would like to see, please let a Board Member know. The annual conference will be held again this year at the Embassy Suites in Greensboro.

Time certainly goes by quickly as it seems not too long ago, we were discussing our anticipation for the upcoming year and now the Annual Conference is just around the corner and before you know it the holidays will be upon us! I actually saw a Christmas commercial on television yesterday advertising gift cards for Sears…time certainly goes by quickly! [read more]

I was dreading this assignment that Hazel Moore assigned to me, as I did not feel that I had enough knowledge to speak to a group of medical professionals on this subject. However, I surprised myself…[read more]
